How did everyone in pretty much all of Ontario like the bit of rain we got? Yowzers! Right? If you were following on my Instagram account @samurphy.reflex then you would have seen some of the pics from Riverside Park in Preston.

Are your gardens doing well? All the rain seemed to have spoiled a few tomatoes where they have rotted on the bottoms. I’m hoping this won’t be the case for all of them. The cherry tomatoes seem to be okay, though some do have splitting on them. Some onions had to be mounded again as the soil eroded from around their crowns (it helps them grow bigger, found this out over the winter from a colleague). Do you have any growing tips you could share with me so that I can send the info out to others? Do you plant in containers? Do you start your own seeds? The more we can share about growing our own food, the more we can achieve self sustainability. Every little bit helps. I read a quote about it not being about how much you have, it’s about what you do with what you have.

We once again headed for a well needed getaway up north to The Chutes Provincial Park. It was so nice and peaceful there while we de-compressed in nature. There’s nothing quite like hearing the birds in the morning, no traffic whizzing by or the sounds of lawnmowers at 8:30 in the morning. I also do enjoy the joyful sounds of kids playing through the campground, finding their own way of doing things, making new friends and playing hide and seek. On our walk around the campground one evening just before dinner, a group of kids had a laundry basket, some string and stones and were making a ‘rabbit trap’. Mmhmm. Evidently they didn’t catch any rabbits, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. They used their ingenuity, creativity and worked together and that’s how kiddo’s learn.
We also headed over to Manitoulin Island for a few days of camping. It was magical! It reminded us of Prince Edward Island, just without the red soil. Even though it rained part of the time it was still beautiful and it didn’t interrupt our explorings! We just took our time and looked around the island.

Stayed at Providence Bay campground and walked the beach up and down many times. At one point we were on the beach with our raingear on a saw a downpour coming in, thought we could make it to the gazebo, but no, we ended up sitting under the eaves on the porch of the campground store for a good 20 minutes. It was a good downpour! the next day we went to Gore Bay and toured around the quaint area. Saw a deer in town on someone’s front lawn with not a care in the world. Enjoyed lunch at Codmothers. Very good food and reasonably priced, even sat on the rooftop patio. On the way back to the campground we stopped at the side of the road and bought some wild blueberries from a friendly elderly couple.
I recommend a trip to Manitoulin Island. You can either drive up the Sudbury way or take the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry from Tobermory. We were going to take the boat back, but it was booked up for 2 days, so we just drove back which was fine. We did stop in Thornton on the way home for some awesome ice cream, I had Lavender Lemonade and Ray had Blueberry Cream. We kept switching back and forth and the regular size is huge, 2 scoops! Highly recommended.
Until next time, hope your summer is fun and sizzling and not full of rain!
