It seems like we are in the dreary part of fall, when daylight gets shorter, most the pretty colours are done, and we just feel like hibernating like the bears. I just can’t believe this gorgeous weather we’ve been having here in Ontario! This is a time to turn towards ourselves and take comfort. Great time to catch up on books, go for a hike, and do some baking! Maybe now is a good time to get creative. Maybe that living area needs a little clean out and touch up, dusty purple on the walls you say? (yes, I did this and it was my fave colour on the walls, especially paired with bookcases to create a corner library and some paintings that were dear to me, I even had an old typewriter of my dads on an antique wooden table that added to the vignette) Or maybe even one wall to create a focal area to highlight family photos. Now is also a great time to add textures, or add pops of colour with some throw pillows, or a cozy blanket. Don’t forget to add some music and naturally scented candles to the mix.
Creativity Helps

I’ve just recently got back into doing my paintings that I stopped for a long time after college. It had burned me out and wasn’t so interesting to me anymore. Through the summer I started a ‘Creator’s Group’, held on a Sunday, where people can come and work on something they already started, but never got finished, or something new. Anything from writing, painting, drawing, quilling, weaving, knitting, doodling, collage, journaling. You get the picture, it’s about just having people come together and create and enjoy themselves. Inspirations come and flow through each other, exploring is essential, and we can bounce ideas off each other as well. You can contact me by calling/texting 226-755-0540 if you are in the Galt area and may enjoy something like this, space is limited. It is not lessons or training, just creating and being present.

Autumn Clearing

With this perfect weather, it’s a great time to organize, get rid of old broken items, clean/put away/cover patio furniture, cover statues and fountains (get rid of any water in them first, as they can crack with water expanding when it freezes), compost the garden and empty any planters that have seen better days.
I also like to ‘cleanse’ the house by getting rid of unused items, anything that has seen better days, vacuum out the vents, change the filter on the furnace, clean screens on windows and clean the windows. A good natural mix for window cleaning is 2 parts vinegar, 1 part natural dish soap and 3 parts water. I invested in a good squeegee and use this mix to clean my big bay window at the front. I attached a long handle from a broom and I don’t even need to use a ladder.
Another great thing to work on is getting rid of or upcycling old clothes that you haven’t worn, or have shrunk;) over the years. Are you crafty? Can you make an apron out of those old jeans?
It is a great feeling to get rid of some of the old baggage to allow for new energy to move in. Just cozying up with a good book works, especially if you haven’t been able to do it lately. Catching up with friends that you haven’t seen in awhile, or just taking in a movie that you’ve been wanting to watch. It is all good for the soul.
What do you like to do in the autumn that helps prepare you for winter? I would love some feedback that I could share with others who may struggle this time of the year, especially with the shorter days and daylight ending sooner.
