Where did February go? March is coming in like a lion, lots of wind this morning of the 1st, and also sunshine. Spring is getting close! Can you smell it in the air? It’s my favourite time of the year, especially since we’ve had a ton of snow these past few weeks. It will be nice to have it all melt and get a glimpse of snowdrops and crocus starting to peek through. That first time the temps get into the plus digits and you get a chance to air the house out. Spring cleaning hits and I am itching to get rid of all the clutter that has somehow taken over the corners and closets and drawers. And yet we still get that blast of winter that makes us hunker down for awhile longer.

Get a refresh on those dry neglected ‘winter feet’. I must admit, I tend to let my feet get a little dry sometimes too. Who will see them, right?! as they snag on socks and sheets. Ugh!
If you can’t manage to make it in for a pedi, the next best thing as a temporary fix is to use olive oil or any other type of natural oil (coconut, jojoba, sweet almond oil, etc.) at night and put on an old pair of socks. This will help your skin absorb the oil and soften some of the rough patches until you can make it in for an Express Pedi or a Pamper Me! pedi. I also use all natural, small batch made lotions, scrubs and soaks for my clients.
Don’t Forget The H20!
It is best to stay hydrated in the cooler months as the cold can seriously dry out your skin. Get a lot of hangnails (those nasty bits of dry skin around your nails that catch on everything?). Number one, do not pull them off, or chew them off. Number two, if you need to get rid of them quickly you can cut them with nail nippers, which are smaller than clippers, but definitely don’t use scissors; and don’t trim too close that it will make them bleed. This is where drinking plenty of water comes into play. You will notice that you will get fewer of them. Hydration is key, as well as moisturizing. A natural oil (olive oil, coconut oil, etc) will be your friend here. Try and wear gloves or mittens when you go outside as well. Your skin will thank you.

Thinking About The Garden?

Have you started any seeds yet? I just bought some the other day, couldn’t help it as we were passing William Dam Seeds, https://www.damseeds.com on Hwy 8 going towards Dundas. Lots of heritage and non-gmo seeds, and they are family owned and operated. We buy a lot of product from them and always have great success with them.
Another seed place that we order from is Richters, https://www.richters.com Richters specializes in Plants with a Purpose. Whether it’s medicinal, culinary, spiritual or other, they are a place to check out for sure. It’s always interesting to see what new plants and seeds they have.
Help Our Pollinators!
Also as the weather will start to get warmer, I like to pass along for anyone who likes to get out there and rake their gardens and grass on the first nice day…please don’t. A lot of our pollinators hibernate in leaf litter and just below the ground, and they will still be sleeping. Please wait until the weather warms up at least a consistent 10* C to rake. Did you know 2024 was the worst year for bees? We are losing them at a scary rate. Check out @tricity_bee_rescue on Instagram for more info.

So please put down the rakes and go for a nature walk on a trail instead. If that doesn’t work out for you, maybe it is a great day to clean out the garage or shed of all the winter stuff that has piled up in there, or even getting out the spring gear as in patio furniture, benches, etc. Just please let the pollinators sleep a little more so they can do their very important job soon. Please pass this info along to others to help save the pollinators.
